In a significant diplomatic move, the Maldives joined an ongoing legal case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in October 2024. This case seeks to hold Israel accountable for genocide in Gaza.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the Maldives’ official intervention. This decision reinforces the country’s commitment to international justice and human rights.
South Africa originally filed the case, highlighting Israel’s alleged violations of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
“Israel Must Be Held Accountable”
President Muizzu emphasized the need for accountability and justice for the Palestinian people. He stated, “The actions of Israel in Gaza must be scrutinized under international law. The Maldives stands firmly with Palestine in its quest for justice and human rights.”
This intervention comes amid growing international criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which have led to a humanitarian crisis.
Moreover, the Maldives’ participation aligns with a broader international push for justice. Countries such as Türkiye, Nicaragua, and Spain have also joined the ICJ proceedings, urging an examination of Israel’s actions under international law.
A History of Support for Palestine
The Maldives has a longstanding history of supporting Palestine. It consistently advocates for recognizing a Palestinian state within its pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The Maldives’ decision to join this ICJ case further solidifies its stance on the issue. President Muizzu reiterated, “We are committed to standing by oppressed populations and upholding international justice.”
Earlier in June, Maldives banned Israeli passport holders and launched a fundraising campaign called ‘Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine.’
The Global Coalition for Justice
This legal case is part of many efforts by the global community to scrutinize Israel’s actions. South Africa’s filing aims to invoke the UN’s Genocide Convention to investigate Israel’s military operations in Gaza, which many argue amount to war crimes.
The Maldives’ participation sends a strong message about its dedication to global human rights and international law. As hearings continue at the ICJ, the Maldives’ involvement is expected to enhance the growing global momentum calling for accountability in the Gaza conflict.
