“Would You Date a Bisexual?” Singaporeans Share Their Thoughts

Dating preferences have always been diverse, but questions about sexual orientation and relationships are becoming more common today. One topic of discussion is dating bisexual individuals.

A video interview by ZULA, a platform dedicated to empowering Singaporean millennials, recently conducted street interviews asking locals, specifically young people about their thoughts on dating bisexual individuals. The responses varied, touching on acceptance, personal boundaries, and religious beliefs.

Open-mindedness in Modern Dating

Many of the people interviewed showed a willingness to date bisexual individuals, reflecting a growing open-mindedness.

One respondent shared, “If I like the person for who they are, then I think that’s okay.” For them, the gender a person is attracted to doesn’t matter as long as trust and commitment are present.

Another interviewee, who identifies as straight, said they wouldn’t mind dating a bisexual partner, viewing it similarly to dating someone heterosexual.

They remarked, “If he’s bisexual, I don’t mind. It’s the same as being straight. You’re just gonna be attracted to other men.”

These views show how many younger Singaporeans are growing up in a world that encourages self-discovery and open conversations about gender and sexuality, leading to more inclusive attitudes.

A 2024 Ipsos survey revealed that 72% of Gen Z and 69% of Millennials believe same-sex couples can raise children as effectively as heterosexual couples, further proving the increasing acceptance of diverse relationships among younger generations.

Religious and Personal Boundaries

However, not everyone shares this perspective. Religion played a significant role for some who felt they could not date a bisexual person. Several interviewees mentioned that their religious beliefs would stop them from considering such a relationship.

Two participants, when asked if religion influenced their view, simply answered, “Yes,” indicating that their decision was firmly based on faith.

Additionally, some simply declined, citing their straight sexual orientation and a preference for dating the opposite gender, others were more open to the idea, as long as trust and loyalty were prioritized in the relationship.

This shows the complexity of modern dating, where beliefs and values shape people’s views. While some are open to exploring different sexual orientations, others remain guided by personal preferences and values shaped by their upbringing or faith.

Balancing Personal Comfort and Relationship Dynamics

For some, the idea of dating someone bisexual is interesting but also raises questions about relationship dynamics and boundaries.

One participant, expressing their thoughts on the dynamics of dating a bisexual person, added, “I consider myself quite an open person. It would be interesting though, the dynamics and the boundaries also,” suggesting that dating a bisexual person could be good for the “experience”.

Despite this curiosity, many emphasized that loyalty and commitment matter more than sexual orientation. As long as both partners are faithful, the partner’s bisexuality wouldn’t be a problem for most.

Growing Acceptance and Generational Divides

The views shared by Singaporeans in the ZULA interview reflect a range of opinions on dating bisexual individuals. While some are influenced by religious beliefs, others are open to embracing their partner’s sexual orientation as long as trust and commitment are at the core of the relationship.

As attitudes toward gender and sexuality evolve, conversations like this are important for building understanding and acceptance in our communities.
