According to Daily NK, this standard procedure for North Korean international participants includes reviews by the Central Party, the Ministry of Sports, and their organizations. The aim is to make sure the athletes stay clear of outside influences that could challenge the country’s socialist values.

Selfies Spark Controversy

Some North Korean athletes, including mixed doubles table tennis players Li Jong-sik and Kim Kum-yong, took selfies with South Korean and Chinese athletes on the podium during the Olympics. While these photos were celebrated globally as a sign of sportsmanship and camaraderie, they have sparked controversy in North Korea.

The authorities view such interactions with South Korean athletes, whom they regard as rivals, as problematic and contradict their strict policies.

Strict Pre-Olympic Directives and Uncertain Future

Prior to the Olympics, North Korean athletes were reportedly instructed not to engage with foreign competitors, including South Koreans. Any breach of this instruction could result in penalties for those involved.
