On August 20, 2024, a tense police operation in Subang Jaya ended with the death of a foreign man suspected of masterminding 45 armed robberies since 2018. The confrontation took place at 6:59 PM on Jalan PJS 9/1 when Bukit Aman’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers tracked down the suspect, who was driving a Hyundai Matrix.
According to Berita Harian, the suspect, believed to be in his late 30s and originally from an African country, fired five shots at the police when they ordered him to stop, hitting their vehicle twice. The police returned fire, killing the suspect.
Criminal Activities and Modus Operandi
The suspect led a gang responsible for a series of armed robberies, resulting in RM8 million (approximately SGD 2,388,602.90) in losses. Since 2018, the gang targeted victims in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. They lured victims through social media with offers of jewelry sales and foreign exchange deals, met them at hotels, and then robbed them after they entered the suspect’s vehicle. This year, two additional cases involving RM320,000 (approximately SGD 95,551.75) in losses are under investigation.
Video Footage
The operation was captured in a 52-second video that has circulated widely on social media. The footage shows a black multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) reversing into other vehicles amidst the chaos, with shouts and the sound of gunfire.
Additionally, the video also captured four shots hitting the windshield of a car. The suspect who fired the shots was not captured in the video.
Ongoing Investigation
Police are now searching for about 10 accomplices believed to be from the same country as the deceased suspect. “We suspect these individuals have been in Malaysia since 2018,” said Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, Director of Bukit Aman’s CID. Investigations into their immigration status and activities are ongoing. The suspect’s body has been sent to Serdang Hospital for an autopsy, and efforts to locate the remaining members continue.
