A Taiwanese man, identified as Hao, has been granted a divorce after his wife, Xuan, reportedly demanded payment for intimacy and conversation while also criticizing him for being “too fat.” The case has drawn considerable attention, highlighting issues of emotional abuse and financial strain in marital relationships.
Marriage Struggles and Limited Intimacy
Hao and Xuan tied the knot in 2014 and have two children together. However, their relationship began to deteriorate in 2017 when, according to Hao, Xuan limited their sexual encounters to once a month. By 2019, she had stopped engaging with him entirely, not explaining her withdrawal. Hao then claimed that Xuan further embarrassed him by telling their relatives that he was “too fat” and “incompetent”.
Financial Demands and Emotional Abuse
The situation escalated in 2021 when Xuan allegedly began charging Hao NT$500 (approximately 49.09 SGD) each time he wanted to have sex or even talk to her. Hao described this as a form of emotional abuse, which placed additional financial pressure on him. Initially, Hao filed for divorce that year but withdrew his lawsuit after Xuan promised to make amends. To show his commitment, Hao even registered their property in her name. However, according to Hao, Xuan’s abusive behavior continued despite her assurances.
Divorce Proceedings and Court’s Decision
By 2024, the couple had not spoken directly for two years, relying solely on a messaging app for essential communication. According to NDTV, their attempts at marriage counseling proved unsuccessful. Given these circumstances, Hao proceeded with his divorce request once more. The court, recognizing the “cold and difficult to fix” state of their relationship, granted Hao the divorce. Xuan, who opposed the separation, appealed to a higher court, but her appeal was rejected.
Similar Cases and Divorce Trends in Taiwan
In a similar case reported by SCMP, a wife in 2014 began charging her husband NT$2,000 (about 196.36 SGD) for sex, along with extra fees for conversations and meals. She defended her actions by citing his insufficient financial support. The couple eventually reached an agreement that the husband would pay NT$20,000 (approximately 1,963.60 SGD) per month to the family.
