11 Years and 547kg Lighter: Khalid Shaari’s Incredible Weight Loss Journey

Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari’s transformation from the world’s heaviest man to a healthier state is truly inspiring. Weighing 610 kilograms at his heaviest, Khalid was immobilized and reliant on others for daily necessities. His situation appeared bleak until a remarkable intervention by Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah in 2013. Deeply concerned for Khalid, the king planned an extensive medical strategy that proved to be life-changing.

An Extensive Medical Plan

King Abdullah’s intervention involved assembling a specialized team of 30 medical professionals dedicated to Khalid’s care. According to Deccan Chronicle, to facilitate his transfer from his home in Jazan to King Fahd Medical City in Riyadh, a forklift and a custom-designed bed were used. Khalid underwent extensive treatment, including gastric bypass surgery, a tailored diet, and a structured exercise program.

Overcoming Obesity

Multiple surgeries were required to remove the excess skin left behind after the significant weight loss. The medical team began with a gastric bypass surgery, followed by a meticulously planned diet and exercise routine. Within the first six months, Khalid lost more than half of his body weight. His treatment continued with additional surgeries needed to address the excess skin from his substantial weight loss.

The Road to Recovery

Khalid’s recovery was both physical and emotional. Despite the numerous challenges, he maintained a positive outlook. By 2023, Khalid’s weight had decreased to an impressive 63.5 kilograms.

Khalid can now take part in physical therapy with the help of a specially designed wheelchair that boosts his movement. While he still needs special equipment to help him sit up, his path to recovery has been defined by his relentless determination and the consistent support he has received.

Now at 33 years old, Khalid continues to inspire others with his incredible story, proving that with the right support and mindset, anything is possible.
