Johor Bahru is home to a unique and historical site that is catching the eye of many travelers. Known as Kota Jail, this 143-year-old abandoned prison complex has recently been converted into a popular tourist attraction.
It is the only prison in Malaysia where visitors actually pay an entry fee to go inside and explore the dark history of the building.

For a small fee of about SGD 1.50, visitors can enter the heavy iron gates and walk through the long corridors of the jail. The site offers a rare look at what life was like for prisoners over a century ago.
The building has been kept in its original state, allowing guests to feel the somber atmosphere of the old cell blocks and narrow hallways.
Life Inside the Prison Walls
Inside the jail, the experience is designed to be as realistic as possible. Visitors can see rows of small cell blocks that once held real prisoners. The rooms are very simple and contain only bare beds, showing the harsh living conditions of the past.

There are also displays of old toilets and shower areas that explain how the inmates managed their daily routines with very limited facilities.
One of the most interesting parts of the tour is the “dark room.” This windowless space was used to confine and discipline prisoners who broke the rules.

The walls of the jail are also covered in drawings and messages left behind by the inmates. These sketches and writings provide a personal and emotional connection to the people who were once locked away here.
Displays of History and Discipline
Kota Jail also features various exhibits that educate the public about the history of the Malaysian prison system.

There are photographs and information boards detailing famous cases and historical events. Additionally, visitors can see old equipment, such as handcuffs and various tools used by the guards to maintain order within the facility.
One of the most intense parts of the visit involves a demonstration of physical punishment. Guides show how a cane was used to discipline inmates.

They explain that even a single strike could be incredibly painful, helping visitors understand the strict rules of the past. For those who want more details, guided tours are available to explain the stories behind the different sections of the prison.
