“Breaking into other people’s homes is a hobby of mine” — Man arrested for trespassing in Japan

A 37-year-old man was detained on November 25 in Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, for unlawfully entering private property.

Yuta Sugawara, an office worker from the area, was apprehended after the homeowners noticed him in their garden around 1:00 p.m. and alerted the police.

Trespassing as a Hobby

During questioning, Sugawara admitted to the crime and offered a bizarre explanation. He confessed that trespassing had become a form of stress relief for him.

“Breaking into other people’s homes is a hobby of mine, and I’ve done so over 1,000 times,” Sugawara reportedly told the authorities.

He described the thrill of avoiding detection as a source of excitement, claiming that the tension of possibly being caught helped him relieve stress.

However, Sugawara clarified that he never entered the homes themselves.

Police Investigate Possible Links to Other Incidents

Sugawara’s admission has raised concerns, leading Fukuoka Prefectural Police to explore potential connections to other unsolved trespassing cases in the region.

Authorities are investigating the scale of his activities, seeking to determine how long Sugawara’s trespassing behavior had gone unnoticed.
