Between 19 and 21 September, social media users shared videos of glowing purple spheres floating across Tampines, Yishun, and Pasir Ris Park.
The orbs appeared to bounce, leave smoky trails, and even spark on the ground.
Millions tuned in, guessing whether the lights were paranormal, AI-generated, or a rare natural event known as ball lightning.
YouTrip Confirms the Stunt
On 22 September, YouTrip, a Singapore-based fintech company, cleared the air in a social media post: “Seen these purple ball lightning videos online? That was us.”
A follow-up video showed the glowing orb landing in a suitcase revealing three tiny purple dragons, later introduced as Trippie, the company’s mascot for its seventh birthday celebration.
Film Studio Distances Itself from Viral Clips
Amid the speculation, the team behind local sci-fi film We Can Save The World!!! addressed the buzz in an Instagram post. They thanked audiences for the strong support since the movie’s release, but clarified that the mysterious orb videos were not linked to their production.
While playfully hinting that the film “may or may not” feature aliens, the studio stressed it had no role in creating or sharing the viral clips.
Netizens React with Praise and Criticism
The stunt drew mixed reactions online.
Some applauded YouTrip’s creativity, saying they were fooled by the videos.
A few noted it reminded them of a similar YouTrip stunt earlier this year involving purple skies over the Johor-Singapore Causeway.
Experts Dismiss Meteorological Claims
The National Environment Agency (NEA) confirmed the orbs were not weather-related.
Ball lightning, a still-unexplained phenomenon, is so rare that no confirmed footage exists, making the viral videos highly unlikely to be genuine.
Celebrations Continue
Despite divided opinions, many commenters warmed to the mascots themselves.
YouTrip has teased more promotions and blind box collectibles featuring Trippie, inviting users to join in the birthday festivities.
