She was charged under Section 334 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt on provocation, which carries a penalty of one month’s imprisonment, a fine of up to RM1,000 (approx. S$301), or both.

Court Imposes Fine, Takes Circumstances into Account

Magistrate Chia Huey Ting handed down a RM150 fine, with a default sentence of three days in jail if the amount wasn’t paid. Yang Khalida paid the fine on the spot.

Additionally, a deputy public prosecutor had urged the court to issue a suitable sentence as a deterrent to others.

In response, her lawyer appealed for a minimal fine, citing her limited income of approximately RM2,000 (approx. S$602) per month and the fact that she financially supports her mother.

Marriage Strained by Distance and Divorce Proceedings

The couple, who married 12 years ago, have reportedly been living apart due to a long-distance arrangement.

They are now in the process of getting a divorce, the court was told.
