Student Collapsed After Complaining of Shortness of Breath
On the morning of 25 July 2025, a Chinese national studying at a private university in Malaysia was discovered unresponsive in his dorm.

According to Sepang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Norhizam Bahaman, the authorities received a call at around 6.20 am, reporting that the student had experienced shortness of breath and subsequently lost consciousness.
Police arrived at the scene and confirmed his death shortly after.
Cause of Death Confirmed as Pulmonary Thromboembolism
An autopsy was conducted at the forensic unit of Serdang Hospital at approximately 3 pm on the same day.
Authorities confirmed that the student had died from pulmonary thromboembolism due to right deep vein thrombosis, a condition involving blood clots in the legs that travel to the lungs and block blood flow.
The incident has been recorded as a sudden death, with police confirming that no foul play or suspicious circumstances were involved.
Allegations of Delayed Medical Assistance Circulate Online
In another platform, Reddit, a user claiming to be a fellow student at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) alleged a serious delay in the emergency response to a medical emergency that occurred on the night of July 25, 2025.
According to the post, the medical emergency began around 11:15 p.m. when the student showed signs of extreme distress, including screaming in pain, cold sweat, and a faint voice. Campus security was reportedly notified shortly after, and a call to 999 was made.
CPR was reportedly initiated by university staff at approximately 11:32 p.m. However, it was alleged that the external emergency responders only arrived around 12.15 am, with an ambulance arriving as late as 1.05 am.
The student was pronounced dead at 12:50 a.m.
The post questioned the university’s readiness in handling life-threatening situations, pointing to the lack of trained medical personnel, delayed response times, and the absence of life-saving equipment like AEDs in student dormitories.
University Responds: No Delay, But Condition Was Severe
In response to the online allegations, Xiamen University Malaysia denied any delay in its emergency procedures.

According to a statement by the university, NST reported, citing Sin Chew Daily, the student’s condition resembled a heart attack but was more complicated and required specialized medical treatment.
“The critical window for rescue was very short and exceeded the scope of typical emergency response tools usually used for heart-related episodes,” the university said.
It added that their emergency response was activated immediately.
This included an on-site certified first responder performing CPR, prompt contact with external emergency services, and assistance from dormitory staff and campus security.
Ongoing Support and Investigation
Police confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Officials have called for sensitivity and asked the public to refrain from making assumptions, allowing the student’s family space to grieve.
Xiamen University Malaysia said it has activated its emergency response task force and is providing psychological support to affected students and the students’ families.
The university also said it is cooperating with Malaysian authorities, hospitals, and the Chinese Embassy to support the student’s family.
