A harrowing case of harassment, stalking, and attempted kidnapping has sparked outrage in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
Ms. Wen, a 34-year-old businesswoman, endured months of escalating aggression from Mr. Chen, a man she reconnected with after leaving her previous job.
Months of Harassment Escalate
The ordeal began in September 2024 when Ms. Wen, who manages social media accounts, reconnected with Mr. Chen after starting her own business.
Initially, Mr. Chen appeared supportive, even gifting her an iPhone to assist with her work.
However, his intentions soon turned inappropriate. He began sending romantic messages, professing his love, and offering unsolicited gifts. When Ms. Wen ignored his advances, his behavior turned vengeful.
According to China Press, Mr. Chen spread malicious rumors online, accusing Ms. Wen of being a homewrecker and engaging in immoral activities. These false claims made her feel anxious and unsafe.
Using Technology to Stalk
In October 2024, Mr. Chen escalated his harassment by secretly planting a tracking device in the iPhone he had gifted her.
This allowed him to monitor her movements. On October 29, he showed up uninvited early in the morning, repeatedly calling and messaging her to return the phone.
In an attempt to end the ordeal, Ms. Wen agreed to meet him outside, hoping he would stop harassing her once the phone was returned.
“I told him I would give him the phone if he stopped harassing me, and he agreed,” she shared. “But when I stepped outside, he drove off and continued bothering me afterward.”
Kidnapping Attempt Near Beauty Salon
The situation reached a terrifying peak on December 24. After leaving a beauty salon, Ms. Wen realized that she was being followed.
As she stepped outside, Mr. Chen suddenly confronted her, attempting to force her into his car.
In a desperate struggle, she fought with all her strength, managing to break free and escape.
Although she narrowly avoided being kidnapped, Ms. Wen sustained injuries during the altercation, leaving her shaken and distressed.
Police’s Response Shocks Victim
After the attempted kidnapping, Ms. Wen went to the police station to report the incident. However, what happened next stunned her.
At the first station, she was instructed to proceed to another station to meet the investigating officer.
To her disbelief, officers suggested she take Mr. Chen along with her in her car.
Ms. Wen recalled that Mr. Chen was sitting at a ‘mamak’ restaurant right next to the station, and the police asked her to drive him to the second station for questioning.
When she refused, Ms. Wen was told to inform Mr. Chen that he needed to go to the second station himself, according to China Press.
Suspect Threatens Victim
To make matters worse, Mr. Chen had threatened Ms. Wen, claiming connections in both law enforcement and the criminal underworld. “He told me he has friends on both sides and isn’t afraid of being investigated,” she said.
Call for Accountability
On December 27, Ms. Wen, accompanied by political representatives held a press conference to demand stronger police action. They urged authorities to prioritize Ms. Wen’s safety and take firm action against Mr. Chen.
The Johor Bahru South Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Raub, confirmed that reports had been received and investigations were ongoing.
A Warning to Stay Vigilant
This troubling case sheds light on the need to stay alert and seek support when facing harassment or stalking. It’s a reminder for women to speak up about suspicious behavior and reach out to people they trust, or organizations that can help.
To make lasting change, it’s crucial for society to raise awareness and for law enforcement to reform, ensuring that justice and safety are always prioritized for those affected by harassment and violence.
