A Fatal Confession

A criminal court in Kuwait has sentenced a domestic worker to death for the murder of an infant she placed inside a washing machine. The verdict follows the worker’s confession to investigators that she killed the 18-month-old boy because he had been “annoying” her.

The tragedy took place in late December at her employer’s home in the Sabah Al Salem area. According to court reports, the child’s parents rushed to the scene after hearing his screams and discovered him inside the appliance. The infant was in critical condition and was pronounced dead on arrival at Jaber Al Ahmad Hospital from severe injuries.

Legal and International Repercussions

Before the trial, the court ordered a psychological evaluation, which found the defendant was mentally competent to face the charges. The case has drawn significant attention in both Kuwait and the Philippines, where the worker is from.

The Philippines Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) extended its condolences to the child’s family and the Kuwaiti government. In a statement, the DMW called the incident an “isolated case,” stressing it does not reflect the values of the more than 220,000 Filipino workers in Kuwait.

The death sentence is not yet final. Kuwaiti law requires the ruling to be automatically reviewed by the Court of Appeals and subsequently by the Court of Cassation, the nation’s highest court.

Similar Verdict for Worker Abuse

In a separate case that also resulted in a capital punishment verdict, a Kuwaiti criminal court recently sentenced a married couple to death for the fatal abuse of their domestic worker.

The court found the couple guilty of unlawful detention, repeated assault, denial of medical care, and forced labor, which led to the worker’s death.

Prosecutors stated the victim was held against her will, beaten, and prevented from seeking treatment despite her visibly deteriorating health.

This case is part of a broader context of international concern over the treatment of migrant domestic workers in Kuwait.
