Claims Wife Tried to Murder Him

On 12 July, 2025, a newly married man was dramatically rescued from the Krishna River near the Gurjapur Bridge in Karnataka’s Yadgir district, after alleging that his wife deliberately pushed him into the river in an attempt to kill him during a photo session.

The couple, identified as Sooraj and Neethu (names changed), had stopped on the bridge during a motorcycle ride back from Neethu’s parental home. Sooraj later told locals that his wife had asked him to pose at the edge of the bridge for a photograph. As he stood facing the river, she allegedly shoved him off the side.

The Krishna River was experiencing strong currents due to high water discharge. Swept away, Sooraj managed to cling to a rock midstream and screamed for help. His cries alerted nearby villagers, fishermen, and passersby, who quickly mobilised a two-hour rope rescue effort to bring him back to shore.

The Rescue

Footage of the dramatic scene, later shared widely on social media, showed a man in a blue shirt holding on to a rope and struggling toward the bridge while locals pulled him to safety. His wife, seen standing on the bridge in the video, appeared distressed as the rescue unfolded.

According to Sooraj’s initial account, the push was not an accident but a premeditated act. He claimed Neethu had encouraged the stop and positioned him deliberately. His version of events suggested she made the act appear like a photo opportunity before suddenly pushing him into the river.

However, Neethu has denied the accusations, insisting the fall was an accident. Reports indicate she later told those at the scene that her husband slipped on his own.

Despite the seriousness of the allegations, the couple reportedly had a brief argument and then left the location together on a motorcycle. No formal police complaint had been filed as of the latest reports. Authorities have nonetheless launched a preliminary investigation after the viral video prompted public concern.

Locals’ Swift Action Averted Tragedy

Eyewitnesses credited the quick response of the villagers and fishermen for saving the man’s life. Using ropes and teamwork, they managed to retrieve Sooraj from the fast-moving water.

The video of the rescue, which has garnered significant attention online, sparked mixed reactions. While many applauded the locals’ heroism, others criticised bystanders who filmed the incident instead of helping directly.

Authorities are reviewing both statements and video footage to decide on possible legal action.

Incident Raises Alarms Over Public Safety at Tourist Spots

This incident adds to a growing list of accidents and alleged crimes occurring near popular photo or selfie spots. Officials in the region have faced calls to install safety measures at bridges and riverbanks that attract tourists and locals alike.

As the investigation continues, authorities have urged the public to act responsibly and report any suspicious behaviour rather than wait for social media footage to spark inquiries.
