A casual outing turned into an unexpectedly fascinating encounter after a video by @x.nil.jh took viewers inside WholeSnail, Singapore’s first and only commercial snail farm.

In the clip, what begins as a simple “let’s explore” quickly unfolds into a rare behind-the-scenes look at a farm few even know exists.

A Visit to Singapore’s Only Snail Farm

“Today we are going to Singapore’s one and only snail farm!”

The excitement is immediate. Located along Pandan Loop, the indoor facility houses rows of snails — from tiny hatchlings to full-grown adults — all thriving in a carefully controlled environment.

Phones are not allowed inside certain areas. But what’s shown is enough to spark curiosity.

Clusters of eggs, described as feeling like “sago,” sit delicately in their spaces. Snails cling onto surfaces, some even appearing “sociable” as they inch along hands.

And a moment that surprises many came along.

Talking about mating, the video casually mentions how snails shoot tiny spikes — a reference to their real-life reproductive process, often called “cupid’s arrows.”

Not Your Typical Farm

Behind the scenes, the operation is far more sophisticated than it looks. WholeSnail specialises in heliciculture — the farming of snails — focusing on the species Cornu aspersum, commonly known as the European garden snail.

These aren’t the same snails seen after rain in tropical countries, but a species long consumed across Europe and beyond, better known on menus as escargot.

Inside the facility, everything is controlled, from temperature to humidity to light exposure and even sound.

The farm notes that snails respond to their surroundings more than people expect. Optimal density, cleanliness, and even “soothing music” are used to keep them in ideal condition. Because there, “happy snails” directly affect growth and reproduction.

Farming for the Future

Unlike traditional livestock, snails are being positioned as a sustainable protein source. Requiring less space, and producing less waste, these mollusks consume what might otherwise be discarded.

At WholeSnail, the snails are fed a mix of fresh greens and surplus produce from local farms — ingredients that might have ended up thrown away.

Nothing is wasted.

  • Meat becomes food
  • Slime is processed into skincare
  • Shells are reused for crafts and other applications

Even the slime is carefully harvested and refined into cosmeceutical-grade products. From food to beauty, every part serves a purpose.

Slow Creatures with a Big Impact

Snails may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about food innovation, and farms like this are quietly challenging that.

Globally, most snails are still collected from the wild, with only a small percentage are farmed commercially.

That’s where operations like WholeSnail come in — attempting to build a controlled, scalable, and sustainable system from scratch.

Their goal is simple: to shift perception from something being seen as ‘icky’ to something essential.

A Different Kind of Experience

The visit ends on a lighter note — with the creator heading to Gallop Stables and meeting a horse.

But the snail farms visuals linger; playing a role in something much bigger — the future of food, sustainability, and how people think about what ends up on their plate.
