A subtle transformation has been occurring in Bristol, the southwestern city, within the last five years. The population of individuals in vans has increased rapidly. City authorities estimate that over 600 live-in vehicles are parked in other locations of Bristol.
This is four times as much as this figure was five years ago. What started as a minor alternative style of life has now been an important problem to the local council.
A good number of these vans are parked close to the parks and green areas. Others opt to live in a van due to the high rent charges and the inability to get a place to live. Others are of the freedom and reduced cost. Through this, however, there have been complaints raised by the residents who live near the vehicles.
Increasing Community Grievances.
The main concern is waste. Bristol city council cites that there have been instances of van dwellers dumping waste and human excrements in the streets. Fly-tipping, defined as the illegal dumping of waste, has also turned out to be more widespread in some areas. The parks are not a safe place according to families who use them.
Local authorities claim that social land should be safeguarded by all persons. According to them, the situation cannot be maintained. Although not every van resident is an issue, the council feels that something should be done to ensure that no more destruction of common spaces is done.
Legal Action Begins
The council in turn has initiated legal action so as to evict certain van inhabitants in certain localities. This aims at clearing some of the spots and minimizing health hazards.
The authorities explain that they are attempting to strike a balance between civic security and justice. They are providing support services to vulnerable people, yet it is not clear how solutions will be provided in the long-term.
According to some residents of this van, they have no other place to go. They describe that they have a small number of options because of increasing expenses on living and insufficient housing options available to them. In their case, the van life is a life choice as well as an economic need.
The city has some tough questions to answer as Bristol tries to cope with this emerging challenge. How would it secure the public spaces, as well as enable housing pressure? As the figures keep on increasing, it is not expected that the argument of van dwelling in Bristol will end any time soon.
