A student of Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) has died in a tragic road accident in Kuala Terengganu. The accident occurred on 5 January, afternoon on the busy road Jalan Bukit Kecil. The deceased student has been identified as Sakirah Hanan Majli, 24, who was living in Terengganu from Johor Bahru to study.

According to eyewitnesses and dashcam footage, a Honda Jazz ran a red light and hit her car at high speed. She died on the spot with serious injuries.
The Moment of the Horrific Collision
The accident occurred at an intersection near a traffic light on Jalan Bukit Kecil at around 1.31pm local time. Police said Sakirah was turning right after the signal turned green when a Honda Jazz coming from the opposite direction ran the red light and hit her Perodua Viva. The intensity of the collision caused an electric pole to collapse.

As a result, the rescue operation became more risky. The fire brigade tried for about 20 minutes to extract the body of the student trapped inside the car. By then, she had no chance of survival.
Attempt to Escape From Crime
The police investigation revealed that the driver of the Honda Jazz was involved in a crime before the accident. Kuala Terengganu District Police Chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said that the man stole a car in the Stadium Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah area.

He quickly fled with several items, including 200 ringgit in cash. The fatal accident occurred while fleeing after the theft. Police confirmed that the car was not stolen, but rather owned by the driver’s brother.
Information on Mental Illness
The investigation also revealed that the accused driver had been suffering from mental illness for a long time. He had been receiving treatment for major depressive disorder since January 2025. His right hand was broken in the accident, and he is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Police said that he will be brought under legal proceedings once he recovers after the surgery. Authorities have requested the public not to spread false information about the incident. At the same time, they have called for respect for the family of the deceased student.
Legal Measures and Precautions
A case has been registered under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 in this incident. Police said that negligence and disobedience to the law are unacceptable in any way in road accidents.

Disobeying the red light, especially at busy intersections, can lead to fatal consequences. Authorities have urged all drivers to obey traffic laws. At the same time, the police have also announced stricter monitoring of road safety.
