Former Malaysian prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has suffered a fracture to his right hip and will remain admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) for the next few weeks.
The development was confirmed on Tuesday, 6 January, by his press secretary, Sufi Yusoff, following medical assessments carried out after the incident.
Fall at Residence Leads to Hospital Admission
Sufi said the 100-year-old statesman was brought to IJN by ambulance at about 9:30am after reportedly falling at his residence earlier in the morning. He was reported to be conscious when taken to the hospital.

The fall occurred while Tun Dr Mahathir was transiting from one part of the balcony to the living room, according to information shared by Sufi.
The incident was first confirmed via a message posted in the official “Dr M Media Updates” WhatsApp group.
Hip Fracture Confirmed After Medical Assessment
In a statement issued later in the day, Sufi said medical examinations confirmed that Tun Dr Mahathir had suffered a fracture to the right hip.
He added that the former prime minister “is expected to be admitted for the next few weeks for treatment and observation” at IJN.

An update on his condition is expected after IJN specialists complete further examinations.
Daughter Says Injury “Serious but Not Dangerous”
Tun Dr Mahathir’s daughter, Marina Mahathir, said the injury was serious but not life-threatening.
She was quoted as saying:
“It is serious, but it’s not dangerous. For his age, everything is relative… he’s fine.”
She added that hip fractures are painful regardless of age and that recovery would take time, noting that at 100, any fall or fracture is significant.
Messages of Support From Current PM
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, extended their well wishes following the news.

Anwar said in a Facebook post:
“Azizah and I pray for Tun’s well-being and speedy recovery, God willing,”
Mahathir was once Anwar’s political mentor before the two later became rivals.
Previous Hospitalisation and Medical History
Tun Dr Mahathir was previously treated at IJN on 13 July 2025 due to fatigue and was discharged on the same day. He has faced several health issues in recent years and has previously undergone bypass surgeries for heart problems.
He served as Malaysia’s prime minister from 1981 to 2003 and again from 2018 to 2020. During his second term, he became the world’s oldest elected leader at the age of 94.
