Three Tourists Detained for Vaping and Ignoring Seatbelt Rules on Bangkok-Phuket Flight

When traveling, abiding by local laws and regulations, especially in a foreign country, is crucial to avoid unnecessary trouble.

This becomes even more important when it comes to aviation rules, where strict protocols exist to ensure safety and order.

However, some individuals fail to uphold these expectations, as seen in a recent incident on a Nok Air flight from Bangkok to Phuket on Sunday, January 5, 2025, on flight DD-532.

Vaping Sparks Concern Mid-Flight

According to The Thaiger, the commotion began when passengers noticed a strong, sweet smell filling the cabin.

One foreigner was seen vaping openly while using his phone, while another attempted to hide his vaping activity in the aircraft’s restroom.

Passengers alerted the cabin crew, prompting immediate action.

Neeranoot Meuankid, a passenger and witness, described the disruptive behavior. She observed them causing a commotion at the gate and noticed them vaping in the boarding queue.

During the flight, the smell became overwhelming, even through her mask, leaving her feeling dizzy.

In addition, Neeranoot observed one of the foreigners ignoring the pre-flight safety demonstration and refusing to fasten his seatbelt during takeoff.

She recorded the incident and shared the footage with flight attendants as evidence.

Tourists Detained Upon Landing

Upon landing in Phuket, the three tourists were greeted by police and escorted off the plane for further investigation.

However, their identities, nationalities, and any potential charges have not been disclosed by authorities.

Vaping Violations in Thailand

Smoking and vaping are strictly prohibited on all flights, whether domestic or international.

Vaping has been banned in Thailand since 2014, with violators facing fines of up to 30,000 Baht (approx. S$1,183) or imprisonment for up to five years.

Ongoing Concerns About Enforcement

Despite Thailand’s strict anti-vaping laws, enforcement remains a challenge due to the continued availability of vape products in local markets.

Incidents like this shed light on the importance of adhering to aviation safety rules to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers.
