Half the Sugar, Same Price: Thailand’s New Beverage Standard Takes Effect

Thailand has redefined the “normal sweetness” of beverages from February 11. From now on, drinks that will be served as “normal sweet” by default will contain only 50 percent more sugar than before. This decision has been made by the Department of Health. According to the government, the main goal of this initiative is to reduce excess sugar intake and reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases.

At the same time, it is based on the principles of behavioral economics so that people’s choices can be guided towards health.

Joint Initiative

Nine major beverage brands have joined the implementation of this initiative. These include Café Amazon, Inthanin, All Café, Black Canyon, PunThai and Chao Doi. From now on, if the customer does not ask for anything different, the drinks will be served with half the sugar.

As a result, it is expected that people’s taste habits will gradually change. In addition, healthier alternatives will be popular in the market. Those concerned say that this is a long-term public health investment.

Reducing the Amount of Sugar

Previously, 16 ounces of iced coffee contained about 7.3 teaspoons of sugar. Now it will be reduced to about 3.7 teaspoons. Similarly, Thai iced tea will have 3.3 teaspoons of sugar instead of 6.6 teaspoons.

As a result, the daily excess calorie intake will be significantly reduced. Experts say that regularly consuming half the sugar will reduce the risk of weight gain and diabetes. It will also reduce the chances of fatty liver in the long run.

Health Benefits

The Department of Health said that reducing sugar slows down the loss of collagen in the skin and reduces premature aging. At the same time, attention and energy remain stable due to less fluctuations in blood sugar. In addition, the tendency to accumulate belly fat and water in the body may also be reduced.

Gradually, the ability to taste changes, and less sweet foods become enjoyable. Experts say that taste receptors are reorganized in about 14 days. So, although less sweetness may seem unusual at first, if you are patient, you will develop a habit.

Netizens’ Reactions

There have been mixed reactions to this decision on social media. Some said that in Thailand, when the government makes a decision, it is implemented quickly, which is an example of effective leadership. On the other hand, someone jokingly asked whether it would be controlled if extra sugar was added to individual cups.

Many others felt that the previous standard was too high and should be reduced to one teaspoon. However, many see this as a first step in the right direction. Overall, the discussion is centered on the issue of public health versus individual freedom.
