In Thailand, traditional tattoo artist Ong Dam Sorot has made headlines for his unique family life. Despite polygamy being illegal in Thailand, Sorot lives with eight wives, all under one roof.
In a viral 2022 interview, the 34-year-old shared how he keeps the household peaceful through communication and mutual respect.
His family’s cohesion has attracted both curiosity and admiration across social media.
How He Met His Wives
Sorot’s relationships evolved over time. His first wife, Nong Sprite, met him at a wedding. Other wives joined later, from meeting at the market to connecting via social media.
Sorot shares a son with his first wife, while two other wives were pregnant at the time of the interview. They all live together, sharing responsibilities and ensuring a balance of time with Sorot. They credit his caring nature for the smooth functioning of the home.
Public Response
While Sorot’s family setup is unconventional, it has drawn admiration from many who praise their ability to live harmoniously. Their story has sparked conversations about relationships in modern Thailand.
Although some find it surprising, many people admire the family’s peaceful dynamic.
Others take on a more humorous tone, with some mentioning their inability to handle just one partner.
Sorot and his wives have become minor celebrities, with their life gaining attention on social media and local news outlets.
Thailand’s History of Polygamy
Polygamy was widely practiced in Thailand up until it was outlawed in 1935. Traditionally, it was common for wealthy and influential men to have multiple wives, with the first wife typically holding the highest status.
Though the practice is now illegal, cultural remnants of polygamy persist, especially in rural areas. Modern Thai law only recognizes monogamous marriages, yet unofficial polygamous arrangements, like that of Ong Dam Sorot, still occasionally occur within some communities.
A Balanced Home Life
The family divides their daily tasks, with each wife contributing through household chores or small businesses. Some sell handmade products or cosmetics to support the family.
Despite popular belief, Sorot insists he is not wealthy, emphasising that their lifestyle is based on cooperation rather than luxury. He states that his approach to family life is rooted in open communication, where everyone’s feelings are acknowledged.
Their story challenges traditional views on marriage and showcases the possibility of creating a happy, supportive family through unconventional means.
