Teen Social Media Ban Faces Growing Debate as Youth Strongly Push Back

The proposal of the government of Spain to prohibit social media among children aged below 16 years has triggered a lot of emotions among the professionals and children themselves.

Although the government claims that the move is aimed at protecting teenagers, it is believed that the move will, in fact, cause more problems than they will address. The concept has rapidly gained popularity in the nation.

On Tuesday, the proposal was announced by the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez who said that the rules should be made stricter to help safeguard young users on the internet. With the approval, Spain would be the second country to join countries such as the UK, France, Greece, and Australia that have put in place or are intending to introduce such limits. Yet, some do not believe this is the right place to go.

Analysts Say Prohibitions Can Be Counterproductive.

Communication expert Mireia Montana of the Open University of Catalonia cautioned that by outlawing social media, such platforms would only be even more appealing to adolescents. She described it as when something is forbidden then the youths tend to desire it even more. She says that the teens will most probably seek means to circumvent the rules rather than abide by them.

Montana likened the scenario to minors who use forged identification cards to get into the night clubs. She told me that most of them would just fake their age on the internet, steal the phones of older relatives, or even borrow the accounts of friends. To her, a ban also sends a message that adults do not trust teenagers that can make them more resistant.

Youths feel like they are not understood.

The plan has become the subject of many students who have come out to criticize the plan arguing that politicians are not aware of the significance of social media today. College student Monica Aguilera claimed that online sites are not merely fun. She said that it is through social media that the youths plan, communicate with their friends and keep in touch.

Carles Bruguera was another student who shared the same opinion. According to him, teenagers are learning, discovering their interests, and knowing the world around them through social media. He sees it, in his view, as counterproductive because restricting access would only leave the youth alone instead of safe.

Concerns From Tech Leaders

Large tech personalities have also been critical of the proposal. Telegram founder Pavel Durov said that implementing such bans might compel platforms to gather additional personal information about users.

According to him, this would raise the threat to privacy and put the governments in a better position to control online content.

The plan was also highly criticised by Elon Musk, the owner of X. He claimed Sánchez abused power and this further fueled an already heated discussion.

The debate moves on as Spain deliberates on the offer.
