Singapore actor Adrian Pang has been cast as Mr. Miyagi in the UK premiere tour of “The Karate Kid – The Musical”, with the full cast announced on 10 March. It’s a significant casting moment — the role was originally made iconic by the late Pat Morita in the 1984 film, a performance so beloved it earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

For Pang, this marks a new chapter. After 16 years co-running Pangdemonium Theatre Company with his wife Tracie — one of Singapore’s most respected theatre outfits — the company recently announced it will close at the end of 2026. Taking on Mr. Miyagi in a major UK production feels like the perfect way to step back into the spotlight as a freelance actor, and by all accounts, Pang is equal parts thrilled and terrified about it.
If anyone can fill those iconic sandals, it’s Pang. He built his early career on the UK stage and screen—appearing in the West End musical “Hair,” TV series alongside Sir Nigel Hawthorne, and Hollywood films with Brad Pitt and Pierce Brosnan—before returning to Singapore to become a household name in television and theatre.

He’ll be joined by Gino Ochello as Daniel LaRusso, Abigail Amin as Ali Mills, Joe Simmons as the villainous Johnny Lawrence, and Matt Mills as the equally menacing John Kreese.
The musical is built on serious pedigree — the book is written by Robert Mark Kamen, the screenwriter of the original 1984 film, with music and lyrics by Drew Gasparini. It had its world premiere at STAGES St. Louis in 2022 to sold-out houses and strong critical reception, and now it’s making its UK debut.

For those who need a refresher; the original “Karate Kid” starred Ralph Macchio and the late Pat Morita, whose portrayal of Mr. Miyagi earned him an Academy Award nomination. The franchise has since grown into a full-blown cultural institution — four films, a 2010 remake with Jackie Chan, the Netflix hit “Cobra Kai”, and most recently “Karate Kid: Legends” in 2025.
The UK tour opens at New Wimbledon Theatre on 28 April, before travelling to cities including Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool. From there, the production heads to Toronto from September to November, ahead of a planned West End run.
Wax on, Adrian. We’re rooting for you.
