Singaporean circus performer Bryan Wong, known on stage as Brylights, recently faced an unexpected challenge while busking in Covent Garden. Known for his skills in Cyr Wheel, Leviwand, and Hula Hoops, Bryan has been a rising star in the Singapore entertainment industry. His performances, which combine over 21 years of artistic experience, have taken him to prestigious events such as the Singapore Night Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
During a live performance in Covent Garden, Bryan was punched by a disruptive person who invaded his stage twice, causing a major disturbance. This incident was captured in a video where Bryan was seen being punched while trying to manage the disruption.
The Incident
In a subsequent Tiktok video, Bryan detailed the incident and shared his thoughts on what happened. He initially noted that the man disrupted his show twice. He explained that the first time the man came on stage was at the start of his show. Bryan, accustomed to handling such interruptions, managed to keep going with his act. However, the person returned in the middle of the show, creating further chaos.
“I had my three volunteers on stage, and then he came on the stage again. I tried to play it off, but he didn’t want to leave this time,” Bryan said. The situation worsened when the person began kicking Bryan’s equipment. Bryan approached him to remove him from the stage, which led to the man punching him.
“Seeing the kid’s reaction was not fun”
Despite being punched, Bryan stayed calm. “If I fought back, it would not look good on me or on the other buskers. It would just make things worse,” he explained. His decision to remain calm was also influenced by the presence of children in the audience.
“The most frustrating thing for me is the kid’s reaction. Seeing her face on camera made it not fun,” Bryan said.
Bryan mentioned that the punch didn’t hurt physically but was upsetting. He expressed sadness about people who enjoy hurting others and reaffirmed his commitment to his work.
“I came to Covent Garden to be a better busker and to bring better shows back to Singapore. So I’m going to focus on improving and keep going.”
Audience Support
Even though the incident was tough, Bryan received much support from his audience, which he appreciated. In his TikTok caption, he wrote, “The audience was really supportive of me, so that was really nice. Missing Singapore but I’m learning a lot here.”
When asked if he continued the show after the punch, Bryan said that the mixed energy from the audience made it hard to continue with the middle part of his performance. However, he did manage to perform his final act, showing his dedication and resilience.
Moving Forward
As Bryan continues to improve his skills, he remains focused on his goal of becoming a better busker and bringing more polished performances back to Singapore. His dedication to his art and his thoughtful response to adversity are an inspiration to other performers and audiences.
