A Night That Felt Bigger Than Football

For many inside the National Stadium on Tuesday night, the match did not end with the final whistle.

Singapore’s 1-0 win over Bangladesh caused the stadium to erupt into celebration. Fireworks illumanted the Kllang sky as thousands of supporters in their seats chanted, absorbing the moment.

A TikTok video shared by @mardhn7 captured the scene from inside the stands: bursts of pyrotechnics overhead, phone flashlights glowing across the crowd, and fans raising their voices in unison as the Lions signed off their AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifying campaign.

From the pre-match build-up to the post-match fireworks, the occasion reflected the significance of Singapore’s historic qualification for the continental tournament in Saudi Arabia next year.

Stewart’s Strike Seals Perfect Ending

On the pitch, the decisive moment arrived in the 31st minute.

After Singapore initially found it difficult to break down a disciplined Bangladesh side, the breakthrough came through a sweeping move that began in defence.

Irfan Fandi’s cross-field pass found Glenn Kweh on the left, whose initial effort was stopped by goalkeeper Mitul Marma. The rebound then fell kindly to Harhys Stewart, who fired the ball into the bottom corner for what proved to be the only goal of the match.

The goal marked Stewart’s first international strike for Singapore.

Singapore finished top of Group C with 14 points from four wins and two draws, having already secured qualification after their win over Hong Kong in November 2025.

Lions Dig Deep

However, despite the loss, Bangladesh remained competitive throughout the contest. Singapore were made to work for the clean sheet, particularly after the break as Bangladesh pushed higher up the pitch in search of an equaliser.

The visitors came close on several occasions, including a dangerous opportunity in the 79th minute when Mirajul Islam’s effort struck the post with Izwan Mahbud beaten.

Earlier in the second half, Singapore thought they had doubled their lead through Ilhan Fandi, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.

A TikTok recap video posted by @dinie_syahmi_ quickly stitched together many of the key moments from the evening, from the opening build-up and crowd atmosphere to the goal and the celebrations that followed, giving supporters another glimpse of the matchday spectacle.

A Celebration

Tuesday’s match was about more than the scoreboard. The night carried the feel of a homecoming celebration for a team that had already made history by reaching the Asian Cup. The fireworks, which only came after the final whistle, became the visual symbol of that achievement.

Singapore now head into the AFC Asian Cup 2027 with momentum, confidence, and an unbeaten qualifying record behind them. On Tuesday night, the football delivered the win. After the whistle, the stadium delivered the celebration.
