Long-Hunted Fugitive Arrested in Delhi
On 5 July, Delhi Police arrested 49-year-old Ajay Lamba, a serial killer and fugitive wanted in four brutal murder cases dating back over two decades. For almost 25 years, Lamba, also known as “Bansi,” had eluded arrest.

He and his accomplices targeted cab drivers across Delhi and Uttarakhand between 1999 and 2001, luring them with trips to the hills before murdering them and dumping their bodies in remote ravines.
Chilling Crimes Across States and Borders
Lamba’s gang operated with calculated brutality. Their method was consistent—hire a cab to remote areas like Almora, Haldwani, or Champawat in Uttarakhand, sedate the driver, strangle him, and dispose of the body in forested ravines. The stolen vehicles were then smuggled into Nepal and sold.

While police have only recovered one body so far, they believe more victims remain undiscovered. The main areas of operation for the gang were Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Authorities have reopened old missing persons cases involving cab drivers from these regions, suspecting possible links to Lamba’s gang.
Years in Hiding and Continued Crimes
Born in Krishna Nagar, Delhi, Lamba dropped out of school early and fell into crime during his teenage years. After changing his identity in the 1990s, he moved to Bareilly and began working with two associates, Dhirendra and Dilip Negi.

In 2008, he relocated to Nepal, married locally, and lived there for a decade before returning to India. Far from reforming, Lamba allegedly joined an interstate drug trafficking network in 2020, moving cannabis from Odisha to Delhi.

He was arrested in 2021 under the NDPS Act and again in 2024 for a robbery in Odisha—but managed to conceal his past during both cases and was released on bail.
Police Breakthrough and Ongoing Investigation
Lamba’s arrest near India Gate followed sustained surveillance by Delhi Police’s Crime Branch. Two of his associates had already been arrested earlier in connection with the killings. One more, identified as Dheeraj, remains at large. Authorities hope Lamba’s interrogation will help locate additional remains and uncover the full scope of the gang’s crimes.

Investigations are now being conducted in coordination with Uttarakhand Police. Officials are focusing on tracing missing cab drivers from the early 2000s and determining whether Lamba’s gang was behind their disappearances.
This high-profile arrest not only highlights long-standing gaps in cross-state policing but also underscores the vulnerability of cab drivers, many of whom work without adequate safety measures. Police vow to pursue the case until all perpetrators are brought to justice.
