Young gamers in Turkey have taken to the streets to protest the recent nationwide ban on Roblox on August 7, 2024. The government’s decision, driven by concerns over child exploitation and inappropriate content on the platform, has ignited a wave of outrage among its predominantly young users.
Government’s Ban and Children’s Response
Turkey officially banned Roblox, blocking thousands of users from accessing the platform. This decision follows previous restrictions on Instagram and Wikipedia. The ban was reportedly linked to “child exploitation” and “reports of inappropriate sexual content on the platform.”
Since the announcement, children across Turkey have expressed their disappointment and frustration. In a TikTok video shared by user Onliahmet, a group of kids is seen marching through the streets, chanting “Roblox Geri Gelsin” (which translates to “Roblox Come Back”) with their hands raised. This display of discontent has been echoed online, with hashtags like #FreeRoblox and #RobloxGeriGelsin trending.
Online and Global Reactions
The children’s protest has ignited a wave of support online. Netizens from various countries have joined the movement, amplifying the kids’ pleas for the ban to be lifted. One user commented, “ROBLOX GERI GELSIN” we chant in unison and anger” while another chimed in saying, “Save Roblox”.
However, not everyone supports the protests. Some online commentators have expressed their surprise and amusement at the situation, with one user stating, “HELL NAH DID I JUST SAW A ROBLOX PROTEST” While another stated that protesting against a video game ban was bizarre. Despite these mixed reactions, the children’s campaign has gained significant attention, raising the possibility of a larger movement forming.
Current Situation and Future Possibilities
The sight of children passionately protesting in Turkey’s major cities is striking. They are demanding the ability to continue playing their beloved game. According to Dexerto, both the Turkish government and Roblox have yet to provide updates on how they plan to handle these aspects of the ban. Some overseas users have suggested using VPNs to access Roblox, but it is unclear whether this will be an accessible solution for Turkish players.
The outcome of the protests and ongoing discussions between Roblox and Turkish authorities is still up in the air. The young gamers’ passionate campaign, supported by a wave of online solidarity, shows just how determined they are to get their favorite platform back. For now, the fate of Roblox in Turkey is uncertain, leaving many kids eagerly hoping for the day they can once again dive into their beloved game.
