Restaurant Owner in Johor Face Threats and Boycotts Over Feeding Stray Dogs

A Muslim restaurant owner in Johor Bahru has come under scrutiny for feeding stray dogs near her eatery.

Despite receiving threats of boycotts and online criticism, she continues her efforts, firmly stating that all creatures deserve kindness.

Feeding Stray Dogs Sparks Backlash

The restaurant owner, known as @/salaistar on TikTok, shared videos of herself feeding stray dogs often wandering near her restaurant. While some praised her for her actions, others criticized her, claiming that feeding dogs is ‘haram’ in Islam.

Responding to the backlash, she explained that her actions were not against her faith. “They are also God’s creations,” she said. She further clarified that as an animal lover, she can’t help but feed or help any kind of animal.

Additionally, she shared that besides managing the restaurant, she also runs a pet shop called Mashacat. The shop offers various services, including cat food, grooming, and more, further proving her deep love for animals.

Extending Kindness to All Animals

Her love for animals extends beyond stray dogs. In her video, she mentions that not only does she feed stray dogs but also other animals such as birds and monkeys, and taking care of over 50 stray cats at home.

Instead of throwing away leftovers from her restaurant, she chooses to feed them to stray animals, a practice she says helps reduce food waste while earning blessings.

“This is just who I am,” she explained, adding that her connection with animals runs deep.

Mixed Reactions Online

While her actions have drawn criticism, many Malaysians have come forward to support her.

Her TikTok videos are filled with messages of encouragement from users who appreciate her compassion and courage to act on her beliefs.

One commenter questioned what is wrong with feeding dogs.

One commenter shared, “Keep up this noble work, sis. Ignore the words of heartless people who don’t know how to love… I always see you and Mat Yen, and you’re so kind.”

Another user expressed their willingness to support her business, and commented,
“Which shop, sis? It’s okay if they boycott; I’ll bring my friends to support your shop.”

Even fellow animal lovers chimed in, with one commenter saying,
“I also have pets. I have 5 dogs and 40 cats.”

Despite the negativity from some quarters, these comments reflect the outpouring of support from people who admire her kindness and determination to help animals in need.

Balancing Faith and Kindness

The controversy touches on the debate about feeding stray dogs in certain cultural and religious contexts. While some see it as improper, Islamic teachings also promote kindness to animals.

A Message of Empathy

Despite the challenges, she remains firm in her beliefs. She continues to feed the animals and asks others to consider the bigger picture. “Don’t think badly,” she said, urging critics to reflect on the blessings that come from acts of kindness.
