In many cultures, people look to unconventional figures during times of crisis, hoping for extraordinary help. In Malaysia, “Raja Bomoh”, known for his unique rituals, recently made headlines by visiting the site of a tragic sinkhole incident in Kuala Lumpur.
Federal Authorities Take Action
Recently, the Federal Territories Mufti’s Office (a government office in Malaysia that handles Islamic affairs) announced they will summon Ibrahim Mat Zin, popularly known as Raja Bomoh. This decision comes after his controversial offer to assist in the search for the missing woman from the sinkhole incident. The authorities want to discuss his involvement and ensure that his actions align with Islamic beliefs, and not sabotage the religion.
Raja Bomoh’s Involvement in the Sinkhole Incident
On August 28, 2024, “Raja Bomoh” arrived at Jalan Masjid India, Kuala Lumpur, where Vijayaletchumy, 48, fell into an eight-meter-deep sinkhole last Friday (August 23, 2024). Despite the tireless efforts of rescue teams, the missing woman had yet to be found. Seeing their ongoing struggle, Raja Bomoh decided to offer his help, expressing a willingness to use his unique methods, provided he received permission from the authorities.
His Unconventional Rituals
At the site, he performed one of his rituals, sprinkling what he referred to as “special water” around the area where the woman was last seen. His actions quickly drew the attention of the media and public, with many recalling his previous involvement in high-profile cases, such as the search for missing flight MH370.
According to Harian Metro, earlier that day on August 28, a group of four individuals arrived at the scene carrying yellow chrysanthemums. They conducted a brief religious ceremony, further adding to the attention surrounding the ongoing search. However, despite these efforts, there have been no new leads in the search for the missing woman.
Search and Rescue Efforts Continue
The search and rescue operation (Op SAR) has now entered its seventh day, with teams from various agencies, including the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM), Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), and Indah Water Konsortium (IWK), continuing their work tirelessly.
Mixed Reactions and Controversial Past
Raja Bomoh’s presence has sparked mixed reactions. On Reddit, one user expressed disdain, commenting, “Let him go inside the sewer, one less stupid person exists.”
Another user referenced Raja Bomoh’s past, asking, “Didn’t he admit he was just bluffing before?”
This comment recalls a 2017 incident where Raja Bomoh admitted that his previous actions, including his rituals with bamboo binoculars and coconuts, were not genuine. His public apology for these actions, which included claims of stopping a North Korean nuclear threat and locating the missing flight MH370, has added to the controversy surrounding his current activities.
