Russian President Vladimir Putin asked aide and chief negotiator Vladimir Medinsky to report on the results of the talks held in Geneva with Ukrainian and American representatives, before the start of the meeting with permanent members of the Russian Security Council on Friday.
“I would like to give him (Medinsky) the floor, and then also to a colleague from the Ministry of Defence, so they can report to me [about the negotiations]; I would like all permanent members of the Security Council to be informed directly, so to speak, first-hand, and for colleagues to describe how the discussions proceeded and what was agreed upon”, the head of state began.
The third round of talks involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States took place on February 17-18.
After formal talks wrapped up on the second day, Medinsky said it had been ‘tough but businesslike’. Ukraine’s lead negotiator – and Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council – Rustem Umerov said the negotiations were ‘intensive and substantive’.
Previous rounds in Abu Dhabi looked at security and military issues. Russia’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev and other officials were set to cover the economic side of the talks. The US delegation included special envoy Steve Witkoff and businessman Jared Kushner.
