A post-match dispute between football fans erupted into chaos at Bandar Tasik Selatan LRT Station on Friday, December 20, 2024. The clash followed Malaysia and Singapore’s 0-0 draw in the ASEAN Football Championship.
The altercation, which was captured on a 33-second video that went viral, involved two groups of fans. Footage showed individuals exchanging blows, throwing objects, and damaging public transport facilities.
A Midnight Brawl
According to Cheras District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Aidil Bolhassan, the altercation began as a train from Bukit Jalil Station arrived at the Bandar Tasik Selatan platform around 12:03 am.
A group of fans exiting the train engaged in an argument with another group, escalating into a physical confrontation.
Approximately 20 to 30 individuals participated in the brawl, which involved punching, throwing objects such as trash bins, and kicking train doors.
The commotion caused the train to stop for about eight minutes before police and auxiliary officers regained control.
LRT Facilities Damaged
The altercation caused significant damage to LRT station facilities, including broken glass doors and window panels. Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, the operator of the rail service, expressed regret over the incident.
In a statement, Prasarana said, “We deeply regret this incident and will not tolerate any form of violence or aggressive behavior at stations or onboard trains.”
In addition, it is confirmed that no injuries occurred, and Prasarana pledged full cooperation with authorities to address the matter.
Police Report Lodged
Following the incident, Prasarana lodged a police report at the Sungai Besi police station and assured the public of its commitment to maintaining a safe transit environment.
Legal Proceedings and Investigation
Police confirmed that no injuries were reported, and no arrests have been made so far. The case is under investigation for rioting and property damage under Sections 147 and 427 of the Penal Code.
Assistant Commissioner Aidil Bolhassan urged individuals involved to come forward to assist with the investigation. “The situation was brought under control once the train doors closed, and the train moved away from the scene,” he stated.
Viral Video Sparks Public Outrage
The 33-second footage reveals fans aggressively blocking elevator doors and damaging train doors, sparking public outrage over the misuse of public resources. A bystander can be heard shouting, “Hey! This is public transport!” condemning the behavior.
Prasarana also reported that auxiliary police escorted those involved out of the station to prevent further escalation.
