Police explain why men who threw signboard at child were not charged

According to the police, the man in this video did not intend to hit the child, and did not realise that the child was hit. He only wanted to “play a prank” on his friend.

On 22 January 2022, we broke the news that the men who threw a signboard at a child will not face criminal charges. At the tail-end of our article, we noted that it would be in the public interest for the rationale behind such decisions to be explained clearly to the public. On 26 January 2022, in response to  follow-up queries from Mothership, the Police confirmed that the men will only receive stern warnings and provided brief grounds for their decision.

According to Mothership, who quoted the police extensively, the man clad in black received a stern warning for committing a rash act. He wanted to “play a prank” on his friend who was holding the signboard. He was also “remorseful” during the course of investigations.

According to the police, he did not intend to hit the child, or realise that the child was hurt. He has since written a “note of apology” to the victim and her mother. He had offered to reimburse the victim’s medical expenses in full. According to the parents, their child suffered bruises on her back for 10 days following the incident.

The man in white, who the police say “apologised to the child’s mother at the scene“, received a stern warning for dishonest misappropriation of property in respect of the signboard.

The police said the decision was made after consulting the Attorney-General’s Chambers and consideration of the facts of the case. In particular, reference was made to their clean records and relative youth.

We set out a statement from the victim’s parents below:-
