An aggressive topless man, armed with a blue razor, harassed a Cold Storage staff and a young woman, Denise, in Plaza Singapura on 19 July 2024.
The incident was captured on video and posted on Instagram.
What Happened
Speaking to Wake Up Singapore, Denise shared that she was buying groceries at Cold Storage in Plaza Singapura when a man in a blank tank top started behaving aggressively towards an elderly staff member.
The man started pointing his finger and squaring up with the staff member. He accused the staff of smiling at him and said “you think I gay ah?“.
The staff member responded by saying that he was not even looking at the aggressive man.
Denise then intervened by asking the staff not to bother with the man, and the man walked way.
I told the staff not to bother with “this kind of people they siao one“. I think he heard me while walking away. He then turned around and started marching towards me and shouted “WHO SIAO? WHY YOU SAY I SIAO”
When she noticed the man approaching her, Denise started filming.
Man approached Denise aggressively with a Blue Razor
When the video starts, the man, who still had a black tank top on, flexed his biceps and said ‘maciam Steven Lim’ (a reference to the Singaporean internet personality Steven Lim Kor Kor‘ no less than 7 times.
According to Denise, the man started demanding an apology from her. She then laughed at his “ridiculous” request.
He then, for reasons best known to himself, takes off his top before approaching Denise aggressively armed with a shaving blade.
Denise took a step back and told the man, in no uncertain terms, not to touch her. The man then said “You think I want to touch you?” and called Denise a “lesbian“.
In the midst of the exchange, he also said that he had TikTok and challenged Denise to post the video online.
“he also took out a fucking shaver, threatening to cut me or something.”
The man then went on a 2-minute spiel where he accused Denise of “gaslighting” him. When Denise pointed out the fact that the man was the aggressor when he harassed the Cold Storage staff, the man started saying that he was “victimised“.
At one point, he also accused Denise of “racism“.
As Denise zoomed the camera out to break the fourth wall and ask the ‘audience’ if the man’s peculiar definition of gaslighting was accurate, the man took the opportunity (again) to flex his biceps.
Throwing air punches at an elderly staff member
Towards the end of the video, the man also threw air punches (which came with their own sound effects) towards the elderly staff member. The Cold Storage staff member had a hearty laugh and waved the topless man off while he continued tending to the fruits.
Denise thanked the staff member for accompanying her to the MRT station to ensure that she was not followed or harassed by the man.
“It’s not me to just stand by and watch. I’d much rather take the beating and make content out of it than have a retail staff kenna” – Denise
Denise shared that she felt “justified” in standing up to the man as he was being aggressive and harassing the staff.
“A lot of Singaporeans usually have the bystander effect also. And you are not really in harms way if you have more people standing up to the aggressor.”
Denise told Wake Up Singapore that the Cold Storage manager also spoke to her and said that she could reach out if she ever needed to access to CCTV footage. Denise thanked the staff member for accompanying her to the MRT station.
