Benj Haisch, a Seattle-based wedding photographer, recently recovered his stolen camera gear worth $25,000 thanks to Apple AirTags and Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. His story, shared on Reddit, quickly gained attention on the platform. The theft happened during a family trip when Haisch’s camera bag was snatched from the front cargo area of a rented bike while he took a brief restroom break.
The Technological Solution
Haisch’s camera bag, containing a Sony A9 III, a Hasselblad 907X with a CFV100C back, and a Leica 50mm Summilux lens, was taken from the bike. Despite filing a police report, the gear was not immediately recovered. Haisch used Apple AirTags to track the location of the stolen items. Additionally, he wore Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses with a built-in camera to document his efforts.
Tracking the Stolen Gear
While traveling in Scandinavia, Haisch noticed his gear was missing about 20 minutes after returning to his apartment in Copenhagen. Using the AirTags, he traced the stolen items to a location approximately two miles away. Haisch quickly traveled to the area, utilizing real-time data from the AirTags to pinpoint the exact spot where the stolen equipment was.
The Confrontation
Equipped with Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses to record the interaction, Haisch confronted the suspects by stating, “Hey guys, so that’s my bag.” When one of the thieves questioned his claim, Haisch detailed the contents of the bag, including a 38mm f2.5 lens and specifics about the Hasselblad camera.
Haisch noted that one of his cameras was missing from the bag and assumed it was in the thief’s backpack. He pointed out that the missing camera would cause the AirTags to ping from the thief’s bag, revealing its location.
This assertion, combined with his detailed knowledge of the gear, convinced the thief of the seriousness of the situation. Reluctantly, the thief agreed to return the stolen equipment. The Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses captured the entire confrontation, ensuring Haisch’s belongings were successfully recovered.
