A 45-year-old mother-of-two, Jemma Hart, from Swindon, UK, was found dead in her home on 29 January 2024, after neighbors, concerned by her sudden disappearance, alerted the police.
An inquest revealed that her body had been left undiscovered for up to a month and had been partially eaten by her two pet dachshunds.
Neighbors’ Concerns Led to Tragic Discovery
Residents in Jemma’s neighborhood became alarmed after noticing her absence. She was known for regularly walking her two dachshunds, Frankie and Millie, and her pets could often be heard barking in her back garden. When the usually active household fell silent, concern grew.

A neighbor, identified only as Lorraine, recalled her unease when Jemma stopped responding to messages.
“She would always walk her dogs and say hello when we passed each other. But suddenly, she was nowhere to be seen,” Lorraine said. “I heard just one of her dogs whimpering inside. That’s when I knew something was wrong.”

Lorraine attempted to check on Jemma herself but was unable to get inside, prompting her to call the police to make a welfare check. When officers arrived, they discovered Jemma’s body in the living room. One of her dachshunds had also died, while the other was found alive but in a severely distressed state.
Coroner Confirms Suicide, Police Rule Out Foul Play
A post-mortem conducted by toxicologist Peter Street confirmed that Jemma had died from suicide. Police ruled out foul play, stating that no suspicious injuries were found. However, a police officer who attended the scene confirmed that Jemma’s body had been partially eaten by her dogs following her passing.
Jemma’s son, who spoke at the inquest, described her deep bond with her pets. “She’d had dogs in the past, but in 2022, she got a dachshund called Frankie, and a year later, she got another one, Millie. The dogs were her life,” he said.

Jemma, who had lived in her home for ten years, struggled with chronic pain and insomnia. Her declining health forced her to stop working, which took a toll on her mental well-being.
Emphasizing Mental Health Awareness
It is clear that the public remains vigilant about mental health issues and checks in on vulnerable individuals.
Isolation can have devastating consequences, and it is crucial to look out for one another.
