The Northern Lights lit up the sky over Russia’s Leningrad region on Sunday night.

The Russian Space Research Institute reported a significant increase in aurora displays amid the most powerful magnetic storm in the last two months, with the natural phenomenon seen above Vologda, Moscow, Yaroslavl and Arkhangelsk regions, as well as in Tatarstan.
The Aurora Borealis is a natural light display that occurs when charged particles from the solar wind interact with the Earth’s magnetosphere, causing gases in the upper atmosphere to emit light. Such displays can last from several minutes to several days, depending on solar activity.
