Paris Jackson in Court Over Michael Jackson’s Estate: S$84.5 Million Question
Facebook

Paris Jackson, the daughter of pop king Michael Jackson, is currently at the center of a legal battle over her lifestyle and estate. At just 27, she has established herself as a fashion model and musician, but she is also embroiled in a complex and highly publicized legal battle over her share of her father’s $2 billion fortune.

She has alleged that Michael’s estate or inheritance lawyers are taking “extra premium bonuses” for themselves.

On the other hand, the estate’s lawyers have countered that Paris has benefited the most so far, receiving about $65 million (S$84.5) in benefits in her name.

From half a trillion in debt to a $2 billion empire

At the time of Michael Jackson’s death in 2009, his estate was drowning in about $500 million in debt.

But with the financial expertise of two executives, John Branca and John McClain, it has become an empire worth about $2 billion today. They say, “If we had worked in the traditional way, Paris would never have received so much money.”

According to legal documents, Paris alone received about $3.27 million in allowances from January 2021 to December 2022—which includes housing, travel, and music production expenses.

In comparison, her brother Prince (28) received $2.1 million, and younger brother Biggie (23) received $1.05 million.

Concerns over ‘luxury life’ in the family

Another report says that the family is now concerned about Paris’ excessive spending. The source said, “She seems to be spending her money faster than her father—private jets, designer clothes, five-star vacations—she’s living like a rock star.”

Although Paris has not responded to these comments, those close to her say that Paris is investing in her music career and that it is part of her independent lifestyle.

Allegations against lawyers: ‘Extra bonus’ controversy

Paris and her lawyers have questioned some of the payments in 2018. They claim that three law firms were paid $625,000 in “uncaptured time,” for which no specific explanation was given.

Paris’s argument is that “This money is actually a luxury gift to lawyers who are already highly paid.”

But lawyers for the estate countered, saying, “These are not irregularities but bonuses for special work and extraordinary results.” They also said that the payments were made with court approval, not an illegal transaction.

A clash between two generations: legacy or responsibility

Paris’s lawsuit is only her personal claim; brothers Prince and Biggie are not involved. But the controversy raises a new question—is Michael Jackson’s legacy a blessing or a burden for his descendants?

Legal experts say it’s important to ensure transparency in the management of the estate, especially when its value is so huge.

On the other hand, fans say the fight over Michael Jackson’s legacy is as eternal as the music he left behind—but this time, legal bells are ringing instead of the music.

Michael Jackson’s estate executors said that his daughter Paris has gotten around $65 million in proceeds from the estate in the 16 years since his death. The executor said that their business savvy allowed Paris to reap major financial windfalls that would not have been possible otherwise.
