On 26 June, a young man from Rajshahi, Bangladesh, seriously injured himself after accusing his family of pressuring him to get married. The victim, Nazmul Hossain, 22, is currently undergoing treatment at Pabna General Hospital after allegedly chopping off his own genitalia in a moment of distress.
The startling event happened in the village of Maniknagar. Mintu Molla’s only son is Nazmul, who drives an excavator. Nazmul had long resisted his family’s attempts to set up his marriage, according to local officials and neighbors. After a verbal altercation with his family members on the day of the incident, he purchased a blade from the neighborhood market, went into the restroom, and disfigured himself.
Family’s Concern and Mental Health History
Nazmul’s family claims he has a history of mental illness and had previously received treatment. His father told reporters, “He had been doing better lately. We never imagined something like this could happen.”
Family members, including his grandfather and brother-in-law, had reportedly been urging him to settle down, which locals say may have intensified the pressure. Locals said some relatives and neighbours mocked Nazmul by calling him a “hijra”—a derogatory South Asian term for transgender or effeminate men—which they believe pushed him further into distress, ultimately contributing to his drastic act..
Emergency Response and Hospital Delays
After hearing Nazmul’s screams, his family rushed him to the Bera Upazila Health Complex. Doctors there referred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital due to the severity of his condition. However, delays reportedly occurred at the Dhaka hospital due to the case’s legal implications.
Local union council member Rafiqul Islam explained that doctors in Dhaka delayed Nazmul’s admission because the case required police clearance. His family said the hospital admitted him only after several hours had passed, by which time it was too late to reattach the severed organs.
Doctors performed surgery on Nazmul in Dhaka and later transferred him to the 250-bed Pabna General Hospital for continued care.
Medical Condition Stable
Hospital officials confirmed that Nazmul is now in stable condition and under close observation. Dr. Zahidul Islam, a resident physician at Pabna General Hospital, said, “He’s out of immediate danger. We’re providing the necessary medical support and monitoring him carefully.”
The case has sparked concern and conversation throughout the local community, with many calling for greater attention to mental health and family pressures faced by young adults.
