North Korean Athletes Face Disciplinary Actions from Authorities for Selfie with South Koreans

North Korean athletes who competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics are now under intense scrutiny as they return to Pyongyang. Reports suggest that the athletes, who took selfies with South Korean athletes during the Games, are facing a strict ideological review. This process could lead to serious consequences.

A Three-Stage Evaluation

Upon their return, the athletes are subjected to a detailed three-stage evaluation. According to Daily NK, this standard procedure for North Korean international participants includes reviews by the Central Party, the Ministry of Sports, and their organizations. The aim is to make sure the athletes stay clear of outside influences that could challenge the country’s socialist values.

Selfies Spark Controversy

Some North Korean athletes, including mixed doubles table tennis players Li Jong-sik and Kim Kum-yong, took selfies with South Korean and Chinese athletes on the podium during the Olympics. While these photos were celebrated globally as a sign of sportsmanship and camaraderie, they have sparked controversy in North Korea.

The authorities view such interactions with South Korean athletes, whom they regard as rivals, as problematic and contradict their strict policies.

Strict Pre-Olympic Directives and Uncertain Future

Prior to the Olympics, North Korean athletes were reportedly instructed not to engage with foreign competitors, including South Koreans. Any breach of this instruction could result in penalties for those involved.

The athletes’ future remains uncertain. They might face serious consequences, such as political or administrative penalties, or they could receive a warning and be asked to reflect on their actions. As the ideological review continues, North Korean officials will likely implement strict measures for any conduct deemed inappropriate during international events.
