Shocking Cremation Theft in Nepal: Human Bones and Flesh Stolen During Funeral at Pashupati

On 8 August 2025 in Kathmandu, Nepal, two men were arrested for allegedly taking bones and flesh from a burning funeral pyre at the Pashupati Aryaghat cremation grounds. Suspects stole body parts from Ram Shahi of Kavre district during his cremation.

Police say cremation worker Ganesh Dhakal and another man who supplied firewood removed fragments from Shahi’s body while the cremation was in progress. Witnesses allege the remains were handed to a man dressed as a yogi.

Complaint and Arrests

Shahi’s relatives reported the incident to the Gaushala Police Circle shortly after the funeral. Police detained the suspects the same day and are investigating the buyers of the stolen remains.

Authorities have yet to confirm the identities of any buyers or the intended purpose for the items.

Possible Ritual Use Suspected

Investigators are examining whether groups that use human bones and flesh intended the stolen remains for ritual practices.

Police have raised suspicions about a connection to Aghori followers, but have found no concrete evidence.

Pashupati Aryaghat is one of Nepal’s most prominent cremation sites, located along the Bagmati River beside the revered Pashupatinath Temple. It is a sacred ground where Hindu funeral rites are performed, drawing mourners from across the country.

Unprecedented Case

Police described the incident as unprecedented at the historic cremation site.

The suspects remain in custody at Gaushala Police Circle as investigators continue interviewing witnesses and tracing the path of the stolen remains.
