Thai Government Offers Compensation and Support
The Thai government has announced compensation for two Malaysian tourists who were set on fire in a shocking attack in downtown Bangkok last Thursday (7 August 2025).
The Tourism and Sports Ministry’s permanent secretary, Natreeya Taweewong, confirmed the victims will each receive up to 550,000 baht (approx. S$21,817) in compensation, including a maximum of 500,000 baht (approx. S$19,834) for medical expenses and 50,000 baht (approx. S$1,983) for emotional distress.

Families Hope for Medical Transfer
The families of Gan Xiao Zhen, 27, and Ong Yik Leong, 26, have expressed a strong wish to bring them back to Malaysia for further treatment.
However, doctors have advised postponing any transfer plans until both patients have recovered enough to travel safely.
Victims’ Current Condition
Both Gan and Ong have shown significant improvement but remain under close medical care in Bangkok.
Gan is receiving treatment at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital for second-degree burns affecting her face, chest, arm, and other parts of her body. Gan is now able to communicate through writing.
Ong is receiving intensive care at Police General Hospital due to burns on his upper body, The Star reported.
Details of the Attack
The incident earlier took place at around 10 pm near the Big C shopping centre on Ratchadamri Road in Bangkok, according to Bangkok Post.

The attacker, identified as 30-year-old Varakorn Pubthaisong, a former boxer and unemployed security guard, reportedly doused the pair with thinner before setting them on fire.

The suspect admitted to the attack, claiming he acted out of frustration after losing his job.
He was apprehended by bystanders at the scene and is currently held at Lumpini Police Station, facing assault charges.
Ongoing Support
The Thai Tourism Ministry has pledged ongoing support, ensuring the victims receive comprehensive medical, psychological, and logistical assistance throughout their treatment.
