A Habit That Felt Harmless, Until It Wasn’t

A Malaysian man has gone viral after candidly sharing how he lost his legs due to a sugary habit. His nightly habit of drinking soft drinks mixed with condensed milk led to severe complications from diabetes. This led to the amputation of both his legs.

In a TikTok video shared by @kedidi_kakipalsu, the middle-aged man recounted years of routinely ordering Coca-Cola or Pepsi with condensed milk whenever he went out with friends at night. What began as a casual indulgence eventually became a repeated routine with devastating consequences.

“Coca-Cola, Pepsi…  all mixed with milk. Every single night. Honestly, I don’t even know what to say.”

“Every Night, Ordering the Same Thing”

According to the man, the drink was a constant during his nightly hangouts. He acknowledged the habit was excessive, but stopped short of calling it an addiction.

“Every night. Hanging out, ordering Coca-Cola, Pepsi. Mixed with milk.

There wasn’t a single one without milk. All of them had milk. You can’t exactly say it was an addiction.

But it really did taste good. That’s what happened. Every night, ordering the same thing.

The same thing, again and again. I really don’t know what to say.”

Over time, the repeated intake of sugary beverages took a toll on his health.

Diabetes Diagnosis And Life-Altering Surgery

The man explained that he was eventually diagnosed with diabetes, a condition linked to persistently high blood sugar levels. Despite an attempt at delaying drastic medical intervention, his condition worsened.

Both of his legs were amputated to prevent further complications and to save his life.

Now reliant on prosthetic legs for mobility, the man expressed regret over his past lifestyle and shared his hopes for the future.

Shared By A Prosthetics Social Enterprise

The video was posted by Kedidi Kaki Palsu, a Malaysian social enterprise that manufactures and sells prosthetic limbs, while also providing them free to underprivileged amputees in some cases. The organisation regularly shares stories of amputees it supports to raise awareness about diabetes and its complications.

Several other amputees featured on the same TikTok account have shared similar experiences, revealing that years of consuming multiple bottles of sugary carbonated or energy drinks daily left them unaware that their blood sugar levels were dangerously high. Many only realised something was wrong when wounds on their legs failed to heal — a common warning sign of diabetes-related complications.

How Much Sugar Is Really In A Soda?

Experts have long warned about the dangers of excessive sugar consumption. A 12-ounce serving of Coca-Cola contains 39 grams of sugar, equivalent to about 10 teaspoons, which is more than 80% of the recommended daily sugar intake for a healthy diet.

While sugar can provide short-term energy, long-term overconsumption increases the risk of obesity and diabetes, causing nerve damage, poor wound healing, and, in severe cases, limb amputation. Uncontrolled diabetes can also lead to lasting damage to the eyes, kidneys, and heart.

As the man’s story circulates online, netizens have described it as a sobering reminder that moderation is not optional.
