Blackmail Emails With AI-Generated Threats

Several Malaysian politicians were sent threatening emails that claimed to contain AI-generated explicit videos and demanded payment of US$100,000 (approx. S$128,280) to stop public release.

According to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, the government has taken note of these reports and is treating the matter seriously.

Politicians Listed as Recipients

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil listed several elected representatives who received the emails, including:

  • Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli,
  • Subang MP Wong Chen,
  • Sungai Petani MP Dr. Taufiq Johari,
  • Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli,
  • Selangor Exco Najwan Halimi,
  • Senator Manolan Mohamad,
  • Kulim ADUN Wong Chia Zen,
  • and Selangor Exco Dr. Fahmi Ngah.

Details of MP Wong Chen’s Experience

According to a press statement posted by Subang MP Wong Chen on Facebook, he said his parliamentary office received the threatening email on 12 September 2025 at about 11:30 am.

The message went to the office’s general complaints inbox and included:

  • (a) a menacing blackmail note,
  • (b) a screenshot said to be from a video,
  • (c) a QR code linking to a cryptocurrency/stablecoin account.

The blackmailer demanded USDT100,000, equivalent to USD100,000 or S$128,280.

Wong Chen said his officer did not click any links or scan the QR code and that they immediately filed a police report at IPD Subang; an inspector was assigned, and both the MP and the officer were interviewed.

Patterns and Evidence Noted by Officials

Checks found the emails used nearly identical wording, the screenshots looked the same across messages, and they appeared to come from the same email address, Fahmi wrote on Facebook.

Wong Chen told reporters the two screenshots sent to him and to Rafizi were identical in every detail except for the faces, a sign, he said, that the images were doctored and the attempt was “lazy and unprofessional.”

Government Response and Legal Consequences

Following this, Fahmi Fadzil has directed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to work closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to trace and track the people who sent the threatening emails via Gmail.

He reminded the public that issuing threats through digital communication is an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries penalties of up to:

  • RM500,000 (approx. S$152,451),
  • a prison term of up to two years, or both.

He added that the case can also be investigated under Section 503 of the Penal Code.
