About Mongrel
Mongrel tells the story of Oom, an undocumented Thai migrant in Taiwan working as a caregiver for the elderly and disabled.
He faces challenges such as withheld wages, restricted freedom, and suspicion from employers, while other migrants question his relationship with his exploitative boss.
Torn between staying silent to secure his pay or preserving his dignity, Oom’s story reflects the difficult realities many migrant workers endure.
The film’s raw storytelling and unfiltered look at exploitation have resonated with audiences worldwide, earning it recognition at two of the film world’s most prestigious events—Cannes and the Golden Horse Awards.
“We are also excited to announce that Director Chiang Wei Liang has recently been awarded the prestigious Golden Horse Awards 2024 for Best New Director. This is Wei Liang’s second award for Mongrel, after receiving the Cannes Film Festival Camera d’Or Special Mention in May 2024,” HOME said.
Post-Screening Panel Discussion
Following the screening, the event will include a panel discussion featuring Director Chiang Wei Liang, producer Elizabeth Wijaya, and HOME’s Senior Research and Advocacy Manager, Jaya Anil Kumar.
“The panel will explore the pressing challenges faced by migrant workers in Singapore and the region, and discuss pathways toward meaningful change,”
HOME’s Legacy of Advocacy
The screening is part of HOME’s 20th-anniversary celebration. Over the past two decades, the organization has worked tirelessly to support migrant workers in Singapore through welfare assistance, skills training, legal aid, and temporary housing.
HOME shared its impact highlights, including:
- Providing welfare assistance to more than 40,000 migrant workers.
- Training nearly 20,000 workers through its HOME Academy.
- Offering temporary housing to over 10,000 individuals in crisis.
- Publishing 17 research reports and position papers advocating for policy change.
HOME’s mission to protect and empower migrant workers will be further supported by funds raised through this event.
Why It Matters
The screening of the award-winning film Mongrel sheds light on migrant caregivers in Taiwan. Through the film and the panel discussion, the event aims to deepen understanding of the systemic challenges migrants encounter and inspire meaningful change.
As Singapore commemorates International Migrants Day, this event offers a unique opportunity to use cinema to amplify migrant voices and advocate for progress.
