Meta Sets Out AI Roadmap with Bold New Focus
On 30 July, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled a sweeping vision for the future of artificial intelligence, positioning Meta to develop what he calls “personal superintelligence”—a deeply integrated AI designed to support individual growth rather than replace human work.
The company timed the announcement just ahead of Meta’s Q2 earnings call, underscoring the strategic significance of the shift.
The vision comes amid an intense recruitment drive, where Meta has invested billions into building an elite AI unit dubbed Meta Superintelligence Labs. This includes a $14.3 billion stake in data-labeling startup Scale AI and the acquisition of its CEO, Alexandr Wang, who now plays a key role in leading Meta’s AI development. The company has also aggressively hired top talent away from rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic.
Not Just Smarter—More Personal
Unlike competitors focused on centralized automation of labor, Meta’s pitch for superintelligence emphasizes personalization and daily utility. The company aims to embed AI into everyday life through wearables, particularly smart glasses that see, hear, and respond contextually. These devices are expected to evolve into primary computing platforms, surpassing smartphones in importance.

Zuckerberg envisions AI that understands users’ goals, helps them reach aspirations, and supports creativity, relationships, and exploration. It’s a stark contrast to the more utilitarian automation-focused paths taken by other AI companies.
A New Chapter in Meta’s Open Source Philosophy
While Meta previously branded itself as a champion of open-source AI, Zuckerberg’s letter signals a shift. The company now suggests that future models may not be made fully public due to safety concerns tied to advanced capabilities. Although Meta still claims a commitment to transparency, its latest language suggests a more cautious approach. Licensing restrictions and limited data access have already raised questions about how open Meta’s Llama family of models really is.

This nuanced stance may reflect growing internal pressure to compete with proprietary systems like GPT-4 and emerging AGI efforts elsewhere. Reports indicate that Meta has even paused work on its next-generation open Llama model—codenamed Behemoth—in favor of more controlled development of a closed system.
Hardware Will Be the Gateway
Meta’s next wave of AI will not live in the cloud alone. The company is doubling down on augmented reality with devices like its Ray-Ban smart glasses and the upcoming Orion prototype. These glasses are expected to host the first wave of personal superintelligence applications, creating a seamless feedback loop between user perception and AI assistance.

By integrating AI into wearables, Meta hopes to make personal superintelligence feel less like an external tool and more like a natural extension of human cognition. This move also signals a major evolution in how computing power will be accessed and experienced.
AI at a Crossroads
Zuckerberg framed the coming years as a pivotal period for shaping AI’s impact on society. While Meta has long pushed futuristic platforms like the metaverse, the company now seems to view personalized AI as the more immediate—and perhaps more transformative—frontier.
With vast investments and shifting strategies, Meta is wagering that AI should amplify human potential, not render it obsolete. The rest of this decade, as the company sees it, will determine whether AI becomes a tool of individual empowerment or merely another system of mass automation.
