A 40-year-old man was fatally shot in a brazen daylight attack outside a restaurant in Taman Setia Indah, Johor Bahru, on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
The victim, who had been dining with friends, succumbed to four gunshot wounds, as confirmed by Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar, according to Malay Mail.
Gunman Strikes While Victim Steps Outside
The shooting occurred around noon after the victim stepped out of the restaurant to take a phone call.
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage captured the attacker, dressed in a light blue windbreaker, gloves, and a full-face helmet, approaching the victim from behind.
The suspect fired multiple shots into the victim’s back before calmly fleeing the scene. The suspect’s composed demeanor has sparked online speculation that the attacker might have been a hired assassin.
Witnesses initially reported hearing loud bangs before seeing the victim collapse in front of the restaurant.
Chaos ensued as patrons fled for safety.
Police Investigate Motive and Urge Public Caution
Authorities have classified the case as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code. While the motive remains under investigation, early reports suggest a potential link to gang-related activities.
According to the New Straits Times (NST), the victim was a moneylender who had previously been questioned by police in May 2024 over suspected ties to secret societies.
Johor police chief Datuk M. Kumar assured the public that the incident was isolated and posed no broader safety concerns.
“We believe that the incident is not related to any security risks or terrorist threats in Johor,” he said, urging the public to refrain from speculation and misinformation that could disrupt the investigation.
Public Urged to Avoid Speculation
Despite police warnings, a 30-second video of the shooting has gone viral. Johor police reiterated the importance of not sharing the footage to prevent unnecessary panic or disruptions to the investigation.
The police are actively pursuing leads, including analyzing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses.
Witnesses Describe Chaotic Scene
Eyewitnesses described hearing multiple gunshots and initially mistaking them for fireworks. The suspect reportedly fled the scene on a motorcycle shortly after the shooting.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel from Sultan Ismail Hospital. A post-mortem is scheduled to provide further insights into the attack, including the type of weapon used.
