A Chinese man has become the centre of attention after it was revealed that he cryogenically froze his late wife but later began dating a new partner. The unusual story surprised many people online, as it mixes love, science, and personal choices in a way that feels almost like a movie.

The man, Gui Junmin, had his wife’s body preserved in liquid nitrogen after she died in 2017, hoping future science might bring her back someday.

Cryogenically Preserved for Future Science

Gui’s wife, Zhan Wenlian, passed away from lung cancer at the age of 49. Instead of choosing a traditional farewell, Gui decided to use cryonics to preserve her body. He signed a 30-year agreement with a research institute to keep her stored in a large container filled with liquid nitrogen at extremely low temperatures.

According to the report, her body remains sealed inside a metal tank designed to prevent ice damage.

New Relationship After Years Alone

For two years after Zhan’s death, Gui lived alone. But in 2020, he began dating again. He explained that a serious gout attack left him unable to move for days, and the experience made him realise he could not continue living completely alone. He later met and started seeing his current partner, Wang Chunxia.

Gui said in an interview that the relationship was “utilitarian,” meaning it was more about practical support than deep emotional connection.

Public Divided Over His Decision

On Chinese social media, the story quickly spread, and many people wanted to know how to feel about Gui’s situation. Some people understood why he chose to move forward with a new partner after several years.

Others wondered if it was fair to continue preserving his wife’s body while dating someone else. The unusual combination of love, grief, and advanced science made the story even more attention-grabbing.

What Cryonics Really Means

Cryonics is a scientific process where a person’s body is cooled to extremely low temperatures and protected with special chemicals.

These chemicals work like antifreeze to stop ice crystals from forming and damaging the cells. Cryonics supporters believe future technology may one day revive preserved humans.

A Rare and Expensive Choice

So far, around 500 people worldwide have chosen cryogenic preservation, with most of them located in the United States. No one has ever been brought back to life after being cryogenically frozen, and scientists say the idea of revival is still far from reality.

This makes Gui’s decision even more unusual, as he is among the few people who have chosen such an uncommon path for a loved one.

A Story That Continues to Capture Attention

Even years after Zhan’s death, the mystery and emotion behind Gui’s choices keep the public interested. Some people follow the story because of the science, while others are drawn to the complicated love story.

As cryonics technology continues to grow, more surprising stories like this may appear in the future.
