Man, 20, Fined for Slapping Girlfriend After Ignoring His Good Morning Text

Disagreements are common in relationships, as partners sometimes have different expectations or communication styles. It’s normal to feel frustrated if a partner doesn’t respond to messages right away. However, when emotions get the better of us, even minor disputes can escalate into situations that leave lasting impacts.

This was the case in Batu Pahat, Malaysia, where a young man faced legal consequences for letting a disagreement over an unanswered message spiral out of control.

Heated Argument Over Unanswered Text Escalates

In Batu Pahat, Malaysia, a young man was fined RM800 (approximately 244.03 SGD) for slapping his girlfriend after she ignored his good morning message.

The 20-year-old factory storekeeper, Muhamad Nurhaqimi Harun, was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code for causing harm, which could result in a fine of up to RM2,000 (approximately 610.12 SGD), up to one year in jail, or both.

Incident Details

The altercation took place on October 10 at a pet shop along Jalan Parit Bilal, where the young woman had come to deliver lunch to Muhamad. Tensions arose when she had not replied to his “Good morning sayang” text earlier that day, leading to a heated exchange.

After the incident, the victim received treatment at Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital and later reported the matter to the Batu Pahat police.

Court Proceedings and Sentence

According to NST, on October 17, the case was heard at the Batu Pahat Magistrate Court. Muhamad pleaded guilty to the assault. Deputy Public Prosecutor Farah Wahidah Mohd Sharip led the prosecution, while lawyer Mohd Razak Shariff defended him.

Magistrate Suhaila Shafi’uddin imposed an RM800 fine, with a 14-day jail term in default if the fine is not paid.

The Wider Issue of Violence

While disagreements in relationships are common, resorting to aggression is never acceptable. It is important to manage emotions, use healthy communication, and seek peaceful ways to resolve conflicts.

For those experiencing violence, there are support services available, including legal help, counseling, and emergency shelters. These resources play a vital role in helping individuals who may be in similar situations.

Understanding the Consequences of Physical Aggression

The fine shows that physical violence carries legal consequences, even when injuries are minor. Although the fine might seem relatively low, it still conveys that aggressive actions will not be tolerated.

With messaging apps being a primary mode of communication, conflicts over ignored texts can arise. However, it is crucial to keep disputes from turning physical. The legal outcome of this case reinforces the importance of respecting others and resolving issues without resorting to violence.
