A 23-year-old man from Batu Pahat, Johor, was sentenced to four days in jail and fined RM4,000 (approximately SGD 1,214.05) after pleading guilty to secretly recording and storing explicit videos of his family members, including his grandmother.
Case Uncovered Through Digital Surveillance
The case came to light when the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) detected an online link containing explicit material linked to the accused.
Acting on this information, the police raided the family’s home on December 23 at 11:15 PM.
During the raid, authorities confiscated the man’s mobile phone, uncovering disturbing evidence: several explicit videos and images that the accused had recorded without consent.
He later confessed that the material included footage of his grandmother, aunt, and cousin, captured while they were showering or changing clothes in private spaces, Harian Metro reported.
Legal Proceedings
The man, who worked on an oil palm plantation, was charged under Section 292 of the Penal Code, which penalizes the possession and distribution of obscene materials.
The penalty for this violation includes a prison sentence of up to three years, a fine, or both.
In court, the accused admitted to the charges. Represented by lawyer Tan Song Yan from the National Legal Aid Foundation, he faced prosecution led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Farah Wahidah Mohd Sharip.
Magistrate Suhaila Shafi’uddin handed down the four-day jail sentence and fine after his guilty plea.
