M’sian Contractor Sentenced to One Month for Punching Wife Over Food

Domestic violence is a serious problem that affects many families and individuals. A recent case in Batu Pahat, Johor, sheds light on the troubling reality of such violence.

Assault During Argument

On September 19, 2024, at around 2:20 PM, 34-year-old Mohd Farid Sahak got into a heated argument with his wife, a 32-year-old doctor, while they were in their car on Jalan Tukas, Taman Soga, Johor. The disagreement started when she asked him to stop at a shop to buy food.

Ignoring her request, Mohd Farid’s frustration escalated, and he punched her six times, causing her injuries.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

According to reports, Mohd Farid was arrested the next day, September 20, 2024, and charged with causing hurt under Section 323 of the Penal Code.

During his court appearance, he admitted his guilt to the charges. When given a chance to speak, he expressed regret for his actions, saying, “After 40 days locked up, I just want to see them. I can’t handle staying in jail any longer.”

In court, the prosecution shared a statement from his wife, who expressed her disappointment and fear over her husband’s violent behavior.

She stated, “I’m scared of my husband. I don’t want to live with him anymore,” adding that she felt confused about being hurt without reason.

Ultimately, the court sentenced Mohd Farid to one month in prison. Since he had already been detained for 40 days, he was released on October 28, 2024.

What to Do If You’re in an Abusive Relationship

If you or someone you know is in an abusive situation, here are some steps to consider:

  • Seek Support: Talk to trusted friends, family, or a local support group. Helplines and shelters can provide immediate help.
  • Know Your Rights: Legal options, such as restraining orders, are available everywhere. Contact a domestic violence organization or legal aid service.
  • Create a Safety Plan: Have safe contacts, important documents packed, and a leave plan if needed.
  • Document the Abuse: Keep records like photos or messages, as they may help with legal action.
  • Consider Safe Exit Options: Shelters can offer secure housing and support if you decide to leave.

Remember, help is available. Seeking assistance can be the first step toward safety.
